Hoopbench

Brother PES files

PES is the Brother and Baby Lock format and probably the most common home embroidery file. Inside it is a PEC block, which is the part the machine actually sews, and in newer versions a list of exact thread colours for design software.

Open a .pes file

Used by

Brother and Baby Lock home machines, and many other machines and programs that accept it.

What it keeps

Stitch positions, colour stops, a thread slot from the 64 colour Brother chart, small thumbnails, and with version 6 the exact colours and names as well.

What it can't hold

On the machine itself, anything beyond the Brother chart: its screen shows the nearest of those 64 colours.

What to watch for

Brother machines only have a few hoop sizes, and a design that overhangs the hoop usually will not load. Check the size before you transfer it.

Best for

Any Brother or Baby Lock machine. Hoopbench writes PES version 6, and version 1 if very old software needs it.
